Speaking during a conference call to discuss second quarter results with Wall Street, Musk said its self-driving chip, which the company has been working on for three years is “finally coming to fruition.” He used the opportunity to bring out key employees working on the self-driving chip including Pete Bannon, the director of the project for Tesla. During the conference call, transcribed by Seeking Alpha, Bannon said the chips are up and working and that his team has “drop-in replacements” for the Model S, X and 3 that have been tested in the field.
Tesla Is Going It Alone With Its AI Chip
Tesla is among a crop of automakers that are developing and testing autonomous vehicles but it is the only one to announced plans to create its own semiconductor to power the self-driving vehicles. Those plans, which were revealed late last year, was seen as a blow to Nvidia given Tesla has used its chips in its cars as it offers more self-driving features. Tesla To Invest More In Autopilot Chip
During the conference call, Musk highlighted the increased performance of its chip compared to Nvidia's, saying the graphics chip maker’s hardware can do 200 frames a second while the Tesla chip can do more than 2,000 frames a second and signaled more investments to come. “It's an amazing design and we're going to be looking to increase the size of our chip team and our investment in that as quickly as possible,” he said. Musk noted it costs the same as its current hardware and is easily replaced. “ All the connectors are compatible and you get an order of magnitude, more processing and you can run all the cameras at primary full resolution with the complex neural net. So it's super kick-ass,” he said.
Bannon took over as head of the autopilot hardware team after Jim Keller, head of the unit, left to join Intel Corp. (INTC
